Recovery from cataract surgery is generally quick, with most patients enjoying better vision in just a few days. Still, it may take two months to fully recover. Also, keep in mind that cataract surgery is performed one eye at a time to make sure the first eye responds well. The surgeries are typically scheduled one to two weeks apart.
You’ll head home with a lightweight protective shield over your eye and dark sunglasses to reduce light sensitivity. Arrange to have someone drive you home from surgery, and don’t drive again until your eye doctor says it’s safe.
Itching, sensitivity to bright light, and mild discomfort are normal symptoms within the first 24 hours. You can resume light activities immediately, such as reading, walking, and watching TV. Feel free to bathe or shower as usual, but be careful to keep water out of your eyes. Also, don’t rub or put pressure on your eye as it heals.
You will receive clear post-op instructions from your ophthalmologist before your cataract surgery. One tip may be to apply medicated eye drops for a few days to help your eye heal faster and reduce the risk of infection. You may also be instructed to wear the protective shield over your eye while sleeping for at least a week to avoid accidental rubbing.
Your first follow-up appointment should take place the day after cataract surgery. Your eye doctor will check your progress and provide further instructions if needed. By your one-week follow-up visit, you should be able to resume driving. And at your three-week appointment, you will receive a new eyewear prescription, as long as your vision has stabilized by then.
While everyone heals at a different pace, most patients completely recover within eight weeks. It’s important to be patient while your eyesight continues to improve during the cataract surgery recovery process. Vision fluctuations, glare, and halo around lights are normal. Just continue using your eye drops and artificial tears as directed.
