Understanding Cataracts

Take in the whole view.

What is a Cataract?

One of the leading causes of vision loss in adults 55 and older is a cataract. Cataracts are a natural aspect of aging and can significantly impact your vision. The good news is they are highly treatable with cataract surgery.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens which results in blurred or defocused vision. The symptoms are often slow to develop but sometimes the decreased vision can seem abrupt. Common patient complaints are blurred vision, glare at night from lights, trouble with color differentiation, and decreased vision in dim light conditions.

When a cataract becomes visually significant, the patient may notice trouble performing daily activities like driving, working, or reading. When the impact to your quality of life is this significant, your eye doctor may suggest cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is a highly successful treatment for cataracts. The procedure can restore vision and help you get back to your normal daily routine without much downtime.

Cataract surgery involves the removal of your cataract and the placement of an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) into your eye by an ophthalmologist. Modern day cataract surgery has evolved into a highly successful procedure because of innovative techniques and instrumentation.

Our surgeons at Denver Eye Surgeons are cataract specialists who have helped thousands of patients achieve dramatic improvement in vision from cataract surgery with excellent success. Denver Eye Surgeons has been treating cataracts successfully for over 40 years!

Causes of Cataracts

The main cause of cataracts is the change in the lens induced by age.

Other causes include:

Symptoms of Cataracts

As mentioned above, cataracts cause deterioration in vision which can be sensed as blurred vision, glare, decreased vision in low light conditions, and a drop in the quality of your vision. When the symptoms are severe enough to affect your daily routine and quality of life, your surgeon may suggest cataract surgery to you.

What is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is an excellent option for patients who desire improved vision affected by a cataract. When the symptoms are significant, cataract surgery can restore your vision. Cataract surgery involves the removal of your natural cloudy lens and the placement of an intraocular lens. The procedure usually takes less than 15 minutes in an outpatient setting and requires little downtime. Cataract surgery has evolved into a very technologically-advanced procedure.

Our surgeons at Denver Eye Surgeons believe in utilizing the latest techniques, instruments, and intraocular lenses to provide their patients the best. We utilize small incision, no-stitch, phacoemulsification cataract surgery resulting in excellent outcomes.

Intraocular Lens Options

When considering cataract surgery, there are many IOL options. Your surgeon and surgery staff at Denver Eye Surgeons will discuss these options with you at the time of your cataract evaluation in the clinic. The standard IOLs give the patient a monofocal outcome, still requiring the use of glasses. These IOLs have been widely utilized and studied for many years and provide patients with excellent vision.

Patients can elect to have a Toric IOL to reduce significant astigmatism. Patients can also elect to have a multifocal IOL like the ReStor or the Tecnis MF or an accommodating IOL like the Crystalens. These IOLs can give a multifocal outcome, which can decrease the need for glasses. These types of IOLs are often referred to as Premium IOLs and patients that choose these IOLs can enjoy life with more glasses independence.

What Our Patients Say

It was a wonderful experience. Everyone from the beginning to end was exceptional! The surgery was quick and painless. During the LASIK surgery, when I was scared, someone sat and held my hand. It was the small things like holding my hand that made the experience so wonderful.

I had PRK surgery last year. The surgery was uneventful. But the recovery was slow because of the type of surgery. I was nervous that the procedure hadn't"worked" but everyone at Denver Eye Surgeons kept telling it would be fine - and it was!

The staff was very helpful and informative. Dr. Kumar is very knowledgeable and understanding, easy to talk to and willing to spend as much time as needed answering questions. The procedure itself was a lot easier and quicker than anticipated, and the recovery was easy. Best decision I've made in a long time!
