What Is A Cataract?

A cataract is a cloudiness of the lens in your eye. It starts developing when proteins in the eye form clumps, preventing the lens from sending clear images to your retina. Millions of people develop cataracts as part of the natural aging process.

Causes of Cataracts

Cataracts develop during the aging process or when an injury changes the tissues in the eye’s lens. As the proteins and fibers break down, they cause vision to become cloudy, hazy, or blurry. Cataracts can sometimes be caused by surgeries, other eye conditions, steroid use, and medical conditions.

Types of Cataracts

The types of cataracts include nuclear, cortical, posterior subcapsular. The different types of cataracts affect various areas of the eyes, including:

  • Nuclear cataracts often cause more nearsightedness at first, then gradually turn more yellow and cloudy. The lens turns darker yellow or brown over time.
  • Cortical cataracts begin as whitish, wedge-shaped streaks on the outer edge of the cortex’s lens. As the cataract progresses, the streaks start to extend to the center and block light passing through the center of the lens.
  • Posterior subcapsular cataracts start as an opacity near the back of the lens. These often interfere with reading vision and reduce vision in bright light. Most people see halos or glares at night.
